The purchase price of a printer is only part of its total cost. Ink and toner prices can make two similarly priced printers very different to run over time.

Use our calculator to estimate how much your printer costs for one, 100 or 1,000 pages. You only need the replacement cartridge price and its manufacturer-stated page yield.

How Is Printer Cost Per Page Calculated?

The basic formula is:

Consumable price ÷ stated page yield = cost per page

For black-and-white printing, divide the black ink or toner price by its page yield.

For colour printing, calculate the individual cost per page of the black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges, then add the four results together.

This formula works for laser toner, standard ink cartridges and refill bottles used by ink-tank printers.

What Else Affects Printer Running Costs?

The calculator focuses on ink and toner because these are the consumables replaced most frequently. However, your total printing cost may also be affected by:

  • Drum and belt units
  • Fusers and maintenance kits
  • Waste-toner containers and maintenance boxes
  • Ink used during printer cleaning
  • Paper, electricity and servicing
  • The amount of ink or toner used on each page

Manufacturer page yields are tested under standard conditions, so actual results will vary depending on what and how often you print.
