Yet your printer is telling you the cyan, magenta or yellow cartridge needs replacing. It seems unreasonable. If you haven’t been printing colour documents, where has the colour ink gone? With many inkjet printers, ink does more than put words and pictures on the page. Maintenance, print settings and the way the printer produces shades of grey can all affect which colours it uses. **Black-and-White Doesn’t Always Mean Black Ink Only** Selecting black-and-white printing changes the appearance of the finished document. It does not always guarantee that only the black cartridge will be used. Depending on the printer, paper type and selected settings, colour inks may help produce grey tones, smoother images or deeper blacks. A document that looks entirely monochrome can therefore still consume some colour ink. Canon, for example, notes that black-and-white printing can use other inks depending on the paper and driver settings. The behaviour is specific to the printer, rather than a rule that applies equally to every model. Those nozzles need to remain clear, including the colour ones you may rarely use. Cleaning and maintenance routines can consume ink to keep the print head working properly. That means colour ink levels may fall even when your recent documents contain no colour. Epson confirms that, on models such as the WorkForce WF-2860, selecting grayscale does not eliminate colour ink consumption because ink is also used to maintain the print head. Some inkjets stop printing to protect the print head when a required ink supply runs out. Others provide a temporary black-only mode, subject to particular conditions. Certain Brother inkjets, for example, can continue printing in black and white temporarily after a colour cartridge becomes empty. Availability and restrictions depend on the model, so check its instructions before assuming this feature is supported. Names and options vary between printers. A setting called “grayscale” may still allow colour ink use, so the model’s manual is the best guide. **Avoid Unnecessary Cleaning** Repeatedly running cleaning cycles simply because an ink level has dropped can use more ink without solving anything. If print quality is poor, follow the manufacturer’s nozzle-check and cleaning procedure. If the pages look normal, check settings and usage first. **Understand What Is Normal for Your Printer** A falling colour ink level does not automatically mean the printer is faulty. The important distinction is whether it reflects normal maintenance and printing behaviour or an unexpected change that needs investigation.
