# What to Do With an Old Computer: Data Wiping, Recycling and Replacement

22 October 2025
An old computer does not automatically belong in the recycling pile. Depending on its condition, it may be suitable for repair, an upgrade or another user.

Before deciding, consider two things: whether the device still has a useful role and how you will protect the information stored on it.

This guide explains what to check before upgrading, replacing, selling or recycling a computer.

## Back Up What You Need to Keep

Before making changes, identify the files and information you want to retain.

This may include documents, photographs, email archives, business records, bookmarks and software licence details.

Create a backup and check that important files can be opened from it. Do not erase the original computer until you have verified the information you need.

If you need additional storage, [browse storage devices at Hunter Office Technology](https://www.hunterofficetechnology.com.au/computers-and-accessories/storage-devices/). Choose an option suited to the amount of data, your computer’s connections and how the backup will be protected.

## Remove Your Data Before Passing It On

Deleting files or emptying the Recycle Bin does not necessarily make stored information unrecoverable.

Before selling, donating or recycling a device, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for erasing it. Remove memory cards and other removable storage, and complete any required account sign-out or ownership-transfer steps.

The appropriate erasure method depends on the device, storage technology and sensitivity of the information. For business records or other sensitive material, ask an IT professional about suitable data sanitisation or destruction services.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre provides a [guide to disposing of devices securely](https://www.cyber.gov.au/protect-yourself/securing-your-devices/how-secure-your-device/how-dispose-your-device-securely).

## Could a Repair or Upgrade Extend Its Life?

A computer that feels slow may still be suitable for your work after an appropriate repair or upgrade.

Possible improvements depend on the model and may include replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD, adding supported memory or replacing a worn battery.

However, some devices have components that cannot be upgraded. A technical assessment can help establish the cause of the problem and whether the work is worthwhile.

Read our [SSD upgrade guide](https://www.hunterofficetechnology.com.au/hot-news/hdd-to-ssd-upgrade/) for an overview of storage upgrades.

For repair, troubleshooting and upgrade assistance, visit our [IT support referral page](https://www.hunterofficetechnology.com.au/services/computer-repairs/).

## When Is Replacement More Practical?

Replacement may be worth considering if the computer:

- Cannot run a supported operating system.
- No longer meets your essential software requirements.
- Has several faults or recurring reliability problems.
- Needs upgrades that are not supported by its design.
- Would cost too much to repair compared with a suitable replacement.

For business equipment, include setup time and staff disruption in the comparison. The lowest repair price is not the only factor if the device continues to interrupt work.

If replacement is the better option, [shop laptops at Hunter Office Technology](https://www.hunterofficetechnology.com.au/computers-and-accessories/laptops/) or read our [laptop buying guide](https://www.hunterofficetechnology.com.au/hot-news/laptop-buying-guide-australia/) before choosing.

## Can You Reuse, Sell or Donate It?

A working computer may still be useful to another person or organisation.

Before offering it, check that it can run suitable supported software and describe its condition accurately. Include details of faults, battery condition and any missing accessories.

Potential options include:

- Reusing it for another suitable task.
- Passing it to a family member.
- Selling it with an accurate description.
- Donating it to an organisation that accepts the equipment.

Confirm acceptance requirements before arranging a donation. Complete the data-erasure process before the device changes hands.

For business-owned equipment, make sure the transfer is authorised and recorded in your asset records.

## Recycle Equipment That Is No Longer Useful

If a computer cannot be practically reused or repaired, look for an appropriate electronic-waste recycling service.

Australia’s National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme provides recycling options for covered equipment from households and small businesses.

Check the collection provider’s accepted items, opening hours and any conditions before visiting. Do not assume every collection point accepts the same equipment or provides data destruction.

See the Australian Government’s [e-waste recycling guidance](https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/protection/waste/consumers/recycling-drop-off) to find out more.

## Keep Accessories That Still Meet Your Needs

Replacing a computer does not necessarily require replacing the whole workstation.

Your existing monitor, keyboard, mouse and other accessories may remain useful if they are compatible with the new device.

Check display connections, docking-station support and charger requirements before assuming everything will transfer across.

If you need additional equipment, explore:

## Plan the Move to Your New Computer

Before retiring the old device, confirm that essential applications, files and connected equipment work on the replacement.

Check access to email, shared folders, printers and any specialist business software. Keep your verified backup available during the transition.
